Trachoma is an eye disease caused by a bacterial infection. Active infection usually begins in childhood and is characterized by eye discharge, erythema, and irritation. Poor facial hygiene can cause the disease to spread from person to person by driving flies to search for contaminated eyes or fingers. Face washing is promoted as part of the World Health Organization's "SAFE" strategy to eradicate blindness worldwide. A facelift is simple and rational, but its effectiveness in reducing trachoma transmission is uncertain.

Study characteristics Face wash for oily skin

Two randomized controlled trials with a total of 2560 participants in Australia and Tanzania were included. The second study compared four intervention groups over three months in children who already had follicular trachoma: a combined method of face wash plus tetracycline eye drops, face wash alone, tetracycline eye drops alone, and no treatment. The evidence is current until January 2015.

Main results

Both studies reported the number of children with active trachoma as an outcome measure; One study also reported the number of children with severe trachoma and the percentage of clean faces after one year. One study said that washing the face improved facial cleanliness and reduced intense trachoma after a year. The second study did not show that eye rinse alone or in combination with tetracycline eye drops reduced follicular trachoma in children who had follicular trachoma when enrolled in the study.

Quality of the evidence

The two included studies had an unclear risk of bias because they did not report many aspects of the study design.
